Sam Rayburn is where East Texas pineywoods meet wide-open water. The communities around the reservoir draw people who want a lake getaway, room for a boat, a full-time home or land to build on. Brookeland and the south shore put you close to many of the lake’s recreation areas.
How the lake came to be
Construction of the dam began in 1956, and the reservoir started filling in 1965. Originally called McGee Bend, it was renamed for longtime U.S. House Speaker Sam Rayburn. Today it is a centerpiece of outdoor life in the Angelina River country.
